Our service is fully HIPAA compliant. The service acts as a business associate and covered by the
Business Associate Agreement .
If hired, we as a Business Associate may contact your patients with upcoming appointment reminders on your behalf.
Appointment reminders do not require patient concent because reminders are part of the treatment. Same rule governs leaving appointment
reminder on an answering machine. HIPAA explicitly enables this scenario as long as information does not disclose any sensitive information.
Question: Are appointment reminders allowed under the HIPAA Privacy Rule without authorizations?
Answer: Yes, appointment reminders are considered part of treatment of an individual and, therefore, can be made without an authorization.
Question:
May physician's offices or pharmacists leave messages for patients at their homes, either on an answering machine or with a family member, to remind them of appointments or to inform them that a prescription is ready? May providers continue to mail appointment or prescription refill reminders to patients' homes?
Answer: Yes
